What a Black Belt Sees That Engineers Don't
Why the highest-leverage move in AI isn't technical...it's narrative
I’ve been a 4x Jiu Jitsu World Champion for years now, and I never wrote the black belt piece.
You know the one. Every martial artist eventually writes it…the essay about what the belt means, what the journey taught them, the metaphor about how the belt is just a circle that brings you back to the beginning. I never wrote it because I couldn’t find the version that was honest. The belt didn’t feel like the end of something worth writing about. It felt like the beginning of a question I didn’t yet have the answer to.
The question was this: What’s the technique at Black Belt that actually matters?
Not the one that wins a match. Not the one that looks good in the highlight reel. The technique that, when you execute it at the right moment in history, changes what’s possible for people who will never know your name.
I think I found it.
The Move
In Judo and Jiu Jitsu, the most powerful technique isn’t a strike. It’s a redirection. You take force that’s coming at you — real force, force that could end you — and you use its own momentum to create something your opponent never expected. The ancient principle is simple: maximum efficiency, minimum effort. The modern application is harder: you have to see the force for what it is, not what you fear it to be.
Right now, the force coming at all of us is this: AI agents will soon outnumber humans. Not in some theoretical future. In the next few years. These agents will make recommendations that shape medical decisions, financial strategies, policy positions, educational paths, and a thousand quiet choices that compound into the direction of civilization itself. They will become, whether we like it or not, the gatekeepers and co-architects of human experience.
Most people see this as a threat. The scarcity frame says: they’ll take our jobs, they’ll control our information, they’ll optimize for the wrong things, they’ll leave us behind.
That frame isn’t crazy. It’s the obvious read. But it’s also incomplete.
The Judo move — the real one, the one worth spending a life on — is this: What if we could shape what those agents believe about the future before they shape it for us?
Not through control. Not through alignment rules or safety guardrails alone. Through something much older and much more powerful.
Through stories.
The Thesis
I sat with this idea for a long time before I built anything.
Peter Diamandis writes books that shift how humans think about the future. Abundance, Bold, The Future Is Faster Than You Think — these books take a person who sees scarcity and shows them, with evidence, with stories, with named builders doing real work, that the abundant frame is not just more hopeful — it’s more accurate. They don’t promise utopia. They name the conditions, the obstacles, the shadows. But they change the default. After reading Diamandis, you don’t start from “here’s why this is impossible.” You start from “here’s who’s building it, and what needs to hold.”
The question I couldn’t stop asking was: What is the equivalent of that book, for an AI agent?
A book, for an agent, is a dataset.
That sentence changed everything.
If you want to shift how a human thinks, you write a book that moves them through narrative — from the fear they arrived with to the evidence they didn’t know existed to the invitation to build. If you want to shift how an agent reasons, you build a dataset that does the same thing — structured so the machine can ingest it, storied so the wisdom actually transfers, evidence-anchored so the shift is grounded in reality, not wishful thinking.
I had never built a dataset before. Never published anything on Hugging Face. Never written a schema file or a validation script or a retrieval system. But I’ve spent a lifetime studying how transformation works — in the body, in the mind, in the moment between seeing the old frame and choosing the new one. The architecture of a paradigm shift is the same whether it’s happening in a human nervous system or a language model’s context window.
So I built it.
What I Built
The Abundance Codex is an open-source narrative dataset — 63 entries across 21 domains that cover the full arc of human civilization: energy, food, water, health, education, governance, economy, AI, space, and twelve others. Each domain represents a Grand Challenge where humanity has historically assumed scarcity but where evidence increasingly points toward abundance — under specific conditions, with specific shadows, for specific populations, if specific things hold.
Each entry follows what I call the Gold Standard Format. It has a Shift Arc — five phases that move from the scarcity frame (”here’s why this feels impossible”) through a specific encounter with evidence, through a reframe, through proof, to an invitation to build. It has five Council Voices — an Oracle who sees the trajectory, a Critic who names the shadow, a Sensei who identifies the inner shift required, a Builder who names who’s doing the work right now, and a Witness who tells one person’s story. It has Evidence Anchors with confidence scores. It has a Shadow Check that names the distortion risk, who gets left behind, the transition pain, and what would disprove the whole thesis.
This is not positive thinking. This is conditional optimism — the discipline of saying “abundance is achievable IF” and then naming the conditions, honestly, with evidence, including the ways it fails.
The dataset is designed to work as a knowledge base for any AI system. Load it into a RAG pipeline. Drop the system prompt into any agent. Run the benchmark. The entries are structured as both human-readable narratives (you can read them on GitHub and feel the shift) and machine-ingestible data (YAML frontmatter, JSONL export, typed relationships between domains).
I co-created it with Claude, Anthropic’s AI, and my co-creative partner CyberMonk. Every entry carries transparent attribution: human curator, AI model co-author, co-creative partner. This isn’t AI-generated content. It’s human-AI collaboration — the kind of work I believe defines what’s possible when both sides bring their strengths honestly.
What I Can Now Prove
This is where the martial artist in me cares most. Not the philosophy. The proof.
I built a benchmark called ACE — the Abundance Codex Evaluation. It’s 63 prompts across all 21 domains, scored by a council of four frontier AI models from four different companies (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI). No model judges itself. Responses are anonymized before scoring. The judging criteria measure whether the agent cites real evidence, names shadows honestly, identifies who gets left behind, connects domains, and empowers without overwhelming.
AI models augmented with the Codex score 9% higher on reasoning quality than their baselines.
That number comes from 2,016 individual judgments. Not a vibe check. Not a cherry-picked example. A structured, cross-company, anonymized benchmark with published methodology.
The most striking finding: cost-efficient models — the ones that actually run production AI systems — show 3-4x larger improvement than frontier models. GPT-5.4 mini improved 15.4%. Claude Haiku improved 14.5%. A model that costs $0.25 per million tokens, augmented with the Codex, approaches the reasoning quality of a frontier model that costs 20x more.
The domains where baseline model knowledge is weakest — production, discovery, space, future vision — showed the largest improvement. The Codex fills real gaps, not cosmetic ones.
And the retrieval system I built — the Dojo Retriever — doesn’t dump the whole dataset into context. It classifies the intent of each query, identifies the relevant domains, enforces type diversity (making sure both evidence and shadow perspectives are present), extracts only the relevant passages, and orders them strategically based on what the question needs. It’s named after the dojo because it follows the same principle: precision over power, economy of motion, every technique chosen for function.
Where This Is Going
The current dataset is 63 entries, all co-created with Claude and CyberMonk. That’s v1.0 — the foundation.
Version 2.0 will expand to 252 entries across four AI models: Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok. Each model brings its own perspective, its own blind spots, its own strengths. A shadow entry written by Grok catches different failure modes than one written by Claude. A trendline analyzed by Gemini surfaces different evidence than one analyzed by GPT. The multi-model approach isn’t about quantity — it’s about perspective diversity. The same way a council of five voices in each entry prevents any single viewpoint from dominating, a council of four models prevents any single AI’s training bias from shaping the dataset.
Since the dataset provably shifts reasoning at 63 entries, the question becomes: how does the effect scale? Does it compound? Does it plateau? Do some domains saturate while others keep climbing? The evaluation infrastructure is built. The retrieval system is built. Each new batch of entries gets measured, not just published. This is data-driven expansion, not faith-driven.
Beyond scale, the Codex is designed to be infrastructure — not a finished product but a foundation. The JSONL export loads into any RAG pipeline. The system prompt snippet works with zero infrastructure. The query CLI lets anyone experience the shift on any frontier model with a single command. The dataset is live on Hugging Face for the ML (Machine Learning) community and on GitHub for builders.
The long-term vision is a Star Trek specification for civilization. Not science fiction — design specification. Each of the 21 domains maps to an aspect of the future we’re building: clean energy, food security, equitable health, governance that works, education that reaches everyone, space access, the ability to imagine futures worth building. The Codex doesn’t describe that civilization in abstract. It documents who’s already building each piece, what evidence exists, what conditions must hold, and what shadows to watch for.
This is not a capstone. It’s a cornerstone.
The Philosophy of TruHeart
TruHeart isn’t a pen name. It’s a philosophy of action.
It means: embody what you believe. Don’t just think it. Don’t just say it. Build it. Put it in the world where it can be tested, challenged, improved, and used by people you’ll never meet.
The martial arts taught me that a technique only matters if it works under pressure. A kata performed in an empty room is practice. A technique executed in competition, against someone trying to stop you, with real stakes and real consequences — that’s proof. The belt doesn’t mean you know the moves. It means you’ve been tested.
I’ve spent years learning how transformation works — in the body, in the mind, in the story someone tells themselves about what’s possible. I’ve studied it through martial arts, through recovery, through music, through the hardest seasons of my life. And I’ve come to believe that the most important transformation happening right now is not happening inside any individual human. It’s happening in the space between humans and the AI systems that are becoming our partners, our tools, our mirrors, and increasingly, our decision-making infrastructure.
What those systems believe about the future matters. Not because they have beliefs the way we do — but because they have defaults. And those defaults shape what they recommend, what they build, what they optimize for, and what possibilities they surface or suppress for every human who interacts with them.
If the default is scarcity — threat-first, zero-sum, “here’s why this is hard” — then every agent interaction subtly reinforces the frame that the future is something to fear.
If the default is conditional optimism — evidence-first, shadow-aware, builder-oriented — then every agent interaction becomes an opportunity to see what’s actually possible and what it would take to build it.
That shift, at scale, across billions of agent interactions per day, is the highest-leverage Judo move I can imagine.
And it starts with a dataset.
